A man is now in custody after being located at the Stamford Train Station following a wild police chase in which he reportedly hit two state police cruisers.
At about 1:10 a.m. on Friday, July 6, troopers from Troop G - Bridgeport assigned as additional Fourth of July holiday period patrols were conducting DUI roving patrols and motor vehicle enforcement when they observed the operator of a Nissan Maxima not wearing his seatbelt.
Troopers attempted to pull over the Nissan on I-95 in Bridgeport, however, the driver refused to stop and engaged troopers in pursuit. Through the course of the pursuit, the Nissan operator intentionally struck two state police cruisers, one containing a state police K9, police said. No injuries were reported.
The Nissan eventually became disabled, and the operator exited the vehicle and ran across the southbound and northbound travel lanes of I-95 and onto Stamford city streets fleeing from troopers.
As troopers continued their investigation, they identified the operator as Nelson Perez, 28, of Bridgeport.
Troopers notified area police departments and train stations that Perez was wanted by Troop G.
Several hours later, at approximately 6 a.m., a security guard at the Stamford Train Station notified troopers that a person matching the description of Nelson Perez was inside the train station.
State Police, Stamford Police, and MTA police responded to the Stamford Train Station where Perez was positively identified and taken into custody.
Perez was transported to Troop G where he was charged with:
- failure to wear a seatbelt,
- engaging police in pursuit,
- reckless driving,
- operating an unregistered motor vehicle,
- interfering with an officer,
- assault on a public safety official,
- sale of narcotics,
- possession of more than 1/2 ounce of cannabis,
- criminal mischief,
- reckless endangerment
Perez was held on $150,000.00 bond and transported to the Bridgeport Correctional Center.
Perez is scheduled to appear at Bridgeport Superior Court on Monday, July 9.
